As you know, NATC 2019 was the first taiko gathering in North America with an official Code of Conduct. Codes like these are increasingly recognized as a best-practice for building and strengthening diverse communities. Based on TCA’s core values of Respect, Heritage and Evolution, Empowerment, Inclusivity, and Transparency, the Code was designed to create a welcoming and safe space for all NATC participants.
In the weeks after NATC, we received two separate reports that an individual used intimidating behavior and language towards other NATC participants. These reports are being addressed by the process established within the Code. Investigation is in progress and further resolution will be reported in due course on the NATC Code of Conduct webpage.
We believe this Code had - and will continue to have - a positive effect in shaping taiko gatherings big and small. As a young and growing organization, TCA is proud to have taken steps to foster a better conference experience and environment for everyone. We thank all NATC participants for their support of this important initiative, and we look forward to sharing what we’ve learned with TCA members along the way.
